OSU Cow/Calf Boot Camp!

Cow/Calf Boot Camp Wins National Award

The Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service has an astounding reputation of bringing the University to the people.  One program has made a major impact on beef producers and has received the recognition it deserves.  The OSU Cow/Calf Boot Camp was awarded the 2014 National Winner for the Search for Excellence in Livestock Production Award from the National Association of County Agriculture Agents (NACAA).

This award is to recognize extension programs that develop and carry out an outstanding extension educational program in livestock production and the OSU Cow/Calf Boot Camp (CCBC) has done that very proficiently.  This program gives the producers (50 per camp) about 26 hours of intense knowledge and know-how of the cow/calf industry over a three day period.  Topics include genetics, business management, reproduction, farm management, herd health, nutrition, a farm tour, and small group activities.

Since 2011 there has been 5 boot camps that have graduated 193 producers from six states and Haiti.  The CCBC is relevant to beef producers with any involvement, from new comers to the highly experienced.

Some comments from past camp participants:

This class should be mandatory for all cattle producers. (2011)

Any rancher should be required to attend this type of class as a minimum to try to be a responsible operator. (2012

This program is awesome and has information to help any beginning or mature farmer. (2012)

It was overall very informative, definitely worth the time and money! All presentation people were easy to talk to, very helpful. (2013)

Being a NACAA National Winner is something for OSU Extension to be proud of, but its biggest reward is seeing the impact made on producers’ management decisions.

The next OSU Cow/Calf Boot Camp is scheduled for April 20-22, 2015 in Claremore, OK and registration will open November 1, 2014.
